Discover the Excitement! - Visit Sooke, B.C.

Established as a municipality in 1999, Sooke is a fast-growing progressive minded community of approximately 10,000 people. This hidden gem, located only 35 minutes from Victoria, is rapidly becoming a destination that exhilarates local and international visitors alike.

Originally, the T’sou-ke peoples inhabited the area; a first nations tribe that’s culture is predominant in Sooke’s art and culture today. The T’sou-ke people were the envy of many first nations tribes with the land ideally situated alongside a salmon bearing river and a sheltered harbour. With clams in abundance along the seashore, game in the forests, roots and berries to harvest, and ducks to net, the T’sou-kes had plenty to compliment their steady diet of salmon. The name T’sou-ke is said to be that of a stickleback fish, which can be found at the mouth of the Sooke River. Today, the T’Sou-ke Nation is still a vital component of Sooke’s vibrant community, and recently finished British Columbia’s largest solar energy project.

The Sooke-Port Renfrew region is the premier year-round British Columbia outdoor destination on Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The moderate ocean climate leaves the eco-tourism possibilities unhindered by seasonality unlike other Western Canadian tourist destinations. With once in a lifetime whale-watching experiences only minutes away from the shoreline and endless hiking trails like the leisurely Galloping Goose route, only scratching the surface of Sooke’s outdoor adventures, the Sooke-Port Renfrew region will astonish visitors with its vast outdoor potential.

The picturesque landscape has not only given residents and visitors in Sooke an astonishing capability to experience the natural environment, but it has significantly influenced the region’s arts and culture. The natural beauty has bred a large community of artists, artisans and craftspeople who are known for creating high quality, original works of art using natural materials. In addition, the T’sou-ke influence on local artistry can also be seen. This synergy between the people and the environment has led to an inspiring creative culture that has created a foundation for a significantly artistic population.

The Sooke-Port Renfrew region is a hidden gem on the west coast of Vancouver Island. A vibrant arts and culture aura supplements stunning eco-tourism possibilities, which creates a destination that will amaze visitors from all realms of the globe. The Sooke-Port Renfrew region has long been a hidden gem, but has always and will always be must experience destination!
